While there are obviously quite a few Fantail Cuckoos that overwinter down
south (I heard the call in Walkerville Vic in July on a pretty bleak South
Gippsland day in 1999) they were truly out and about in strength over the
weekend at Studley Park, further along the Yarra at Banyule Wetlands the
other day, and a couple calling on the La Trobe Bundoora Campus two weeks ago.
Just as they seem to be the only cuckoos to overwinter in these parts (is
this right?) so they are just about the first migrants to return. Must be
hardy beasts. The first of the Reed Warblers came back to Bundoora a week
ago, with the greening of the rushes, and the Blackfaced Cuckoo Shrikes
(which seem to be partially nomadic in these parts) have built up in
numbers too.
Can anyone report if the waders started returning to Werribee yet?
