In the UK Pica pica has greatly increased in numbers since
killing by gamekeepers was discouraged and they were accepted by
humans.  More scientific information is, I am sure, available
from the RSPB and others. In Australia this bird must be a
potential pest and should be removed from our ecosystems.

I say this despite my feeling they are lovely birds (one for a
girl, two for a boy......). I have never seen the Azure-winged
Magpie (Cyanopica cyanus) which is endemic to the Iberian
Peninsula. Given its existence I cannot understand the "Eurasian
Magpie" common name for Pica pica.
