Congratulations to Michael Morcombe on his new field guide.
I will use it as I use the other guides - to help me find out more about the
birds I see. I am not fussed if the parrots are a bit too blue or if the
waders are a bit too bright. I've never seen a plate (including those in
HANZAB) which faithfully reproduces a bird in all its beauty - for me, the
plates are guides, interpretations of creatures whose essence can't be
pinned down and confined to paper.
As well as the new guide, I'll continue to use my old and new Slaters, old
and new Pizzeys and all the earlier works which have helped raise awareness
of and interest in birds.
Professional ornithologists may find plenty to criticise - as an average
birder, I thank Michael for this book and congratulate him on such a huge
accomplishment.
