I take on board Dorothy's offence at my comments re 'revolting
illustrations'. I hope it's at least realized I didn't put the current book
into that category.
The general level of illustration in the new wave of bird books is
excellent, and so a standard has been set, not just by a few
illustrators but by a very large number. The standard has probably
been reached largely as a result of the demands (criticisms) of the
buying / birding public for illustrations that are accurate and well
crafted.
I still have some books with those 'revolting illustrations' - I haven't
trashed them, and I'm unlikely to do so. I think a lot of people have
them, and know some of the ones I mean. But I live in hope that
their day is past and that the current standard continues and even
improves. And hopefully high expectations from the birding public
will influence this.
Enjoy your books

PS. Illustrators (or artists, in case anyone doesn't like using
'illustrators') that I think are really good include, but are not limited
to:
Robert Verity Clem, C.F. Tunnicliffe, Peter Hayman, Clive Byers,
David Percival, Frank Knight, Peter Trusler, Richard Weatherly, Bill
Cooper, Nick Day, Phillip Burton, Robert Gilmour, Peter Slater ...
The list goes on and on.
