To raptor-watchers: Anyone
driving through central NSW, along the Newell Highway might like to take a
rest-break at the town of Peak Hill. I am told that, at the moment there
are a number of raptor species hanging out at the gold mine just on the town's
outskirts.
The birds seem to have come in to that
sheltered and mouse-rich area for the colder months, and are being seen every
day by mine personnel. The raptors are being seen over and in the mine dump
area, where large artificial hills have been formed.
On the weekend, a large, very pale
raptor was seen in the Peak Hill area (not by me) - this bird had a small
crest, looked "like an Osprey", and could have been a very pale Little Eagle.
Travellers might keep an eye out for this bird, and let us know if a positive id
can be made.
