Hi Birders,
It is good news for the NSW Central Coast as Regent
Honeyeaters were found at two locations during the Swift Parrot/Regent
Honeyeater Surveys over the period 20/21 May 2000.First time that the
CCRHVCG members have found any Regents in their survey sites for the last 3
years! The first group of 4 were seen by myself
on 18/5/2000 at South Swansea, 1.8 km from the Swansea Roundabout (approaching
from Sydney), along the Old Pacific Highway near the NESCA Recreation Area.
Enter the Crown (?) Reserve by a bush track to the right of the NESCA Gate,
passed dumped rubbish and two Coral Trees. The four birds were in the 3rd Swamp
Mahogany Tree on the left side passed the Coral Trees. A small group were seen
in the exact same place at this time of the year by David Geering in
1996.
The second group of 4 were seen by Gwen and Arthur
Biggs at the junction of Sun Valley Road and Avoca Drive, Erina on 20/5/2000.
The birds were in group of flowering Swamp Mahoganys that are in a strip along
Avoca Drive between Sun Valey Rd & Milperra Rd in front of a Van Park
Village, near the Sun Valley corner with Avoca Drive. However suitable flowering
Trees are all along Sun Valley Rd, Koolang Rd & Milperra Rd. Yellow-faced,
White-naped, Lewin's Honeyaters, Silvereyes, Spinebills, Red & Little
Wattlebirds, Noisy Miners, Noisy Friarbirds and Rainbow Lorikeets are all
present at the site. Across the road is a patch of bush with many flowering
Swamp Mahoganies. This site (across the road) is one surveyed annually by the
Central Coast Regent Honeyater Voluntary Conservation Group but Regents have not
been found here previously.
No colour bands seen!
The birds have not been seen since at either site
but both sites still appear to be very suitable and are well worth checking out
if you are in the area. Please let David Geering or myself know if you see any
Regents.
