Megapodes: Past, Present and Future
At SHOC 2000, Wednesday June 28 introduces us to the world of the megapode.
The megapodes are one of the most remarkable families of birds and are a
speciality of Australasia and southern Oceania. Their unique methods of
incubation - using natural occurring sources of environmental heats
(geothermal, solar and microbial) - is only one of many fascinating aspects
of these species.
Speakers from New Zealand, USA, Germany and Australia will discuss aspects
such as:
. How do the hatchlings, which receive no care from their parents at all,
survive alone?
. The conservation of endangered megapodes on Pacific Islands
. Female competition for incubation mounds
. Novel approaches to megapode taxonomy.
The Congress will be held at Griffith University, Brisbane, from 27 June to
2 July 2000 and will present over 200 speakers.
