Hi Ian,
A great twitchathon score. Are you going to enlighten us about how you got
the Pratincole.
>3. Australian Pratincole (I guess it was the way we got it)
We had just twitched the Zitting Cisticola at Giru (South of Townsville, Nth
Queensland) and I turned south on the Bruce Hwy and started to pick up speed
heading for a 300 metre long causeway section of the road. Mal Turner saw
a Australian Pratincole cut across the Hwy behind the car, three voices
yelled "stop the car" I said "no way not on this causeway", I crossed the
causeway did a U turn and headed back across the causeway, I did another U
turn and stopped the 4WD in the approximate place where the bird crossed the
road. Three bird crazy twitchers lept from the 4WD ran out onto the
causeway and spotted the pratincole out in the paddock. This all exercise
took place with umpteen semi trailers roaring north and south across the
said causeway.
Regards
Ian Clayton

To a man ornithologists are tall, slender, and bearded, so
that they can stand motionless for hours, imitating kindly
trees, as they watch for birds.
