Re: herons and fish ponds. I remember a recommendation in the UK that a simple "fence" with a line of string about 30cm off the ground would stop Grey Herons because they tend to land away from the water and then walk to its edge. If that works here it would be a way of saving some precious frogs/tadpoles if only there weren't carp/goldfish keeping them from occupying the pond. Frogs help control insects - goldfish don't.
