Subject: Crested Pigeons in Melbourne (Vic.)
An interesting observation over the weekend. In my suburban Richmond
(inner Melbourne) my wife and I went walking to one of the small local
sports/parklands (Burnley Park) on the Yarra River after last Saturday
mornings hail/shower.
Apart from the usual unrestrained dogs harrassing the birdlife, we observed
a group of five Crested Pigeons feeding on the ground and being chased by
the local Magpies. Has anyone else noted CPs this close to the city and
other move, ents further south in the state? The southern limits of the
natural range for the species has been increasing for years (Emison et al.
1987) and a colleague of mine has observed an individual at Derby River
Wilsons Promontory in the last 12 months.
Wouldn't it be nice if they made some inroads into the Spotted Turtle Dove
distribution.
