birding-aus

Hi Ian

Well, I can only speak for the USA. For that I recommend the National
Geographic "Field Guide to the Birds of North America" by the National
Geographic Society. It is about to be released in its third edition (best
guesses are somewhere between April and July!!!). I would wait to get the
third edition because there have been recent splits and they should all be
represented in the new edition. The NG field guide is one of the easiest to
obtain and I would wait until you arrive (of course that would spoil the
pre-trip practice). When is your trip planned??

If you reply off the birding-aus list, I will try to stay in touch and keep
you posted.

By the way, thanks to all you folks that showed us good birds when we were
there. Never ran into a problem, everyone was helpful but we still missed
some good birds -- Grass Wrens, etc.

For Britain you might ask around about "Birds of EUrope" by Lars Jonsson. I
know that there are newer books out but this one did us well for Britain.

G'day

Bob Taylor
