Good point Susan. Alas, many of those names from the European heritage are used and known by a multitude of non-birdwatchers - our public. They, more than anyone, are the ones you would knock off their perch with such changes. By the way, evocative as it is, "Emu" is European, from Portuguese. It has been variously used for all the giant ratites: rheas, cassowaries and Ostrich. There is even an "Emeus", a generic name for moas. However, this does not distract from your assertion. What is the Victorian Babbler by the way? Actually, it would be a good name for the White-backed Magpie. Best wishes Glen Ingram Brisbane, Australia.
