The Wildlife Preservation Soc. (GPO Box 3428 Sydney 2001) hold an annual bird count on New Year's Day (previously Australia Day with much confusion over public holidays!). They ask people to count for an hour (preferably 0700-0800 but not essential), in their gardens, or in a nearby park (not too big?) if they lack gardens. They publish annual results in some magazine, with statistics state by state. If you can track some of these down, you should be able to rate your garden's ornitho-diversity.
