Since most people here seem to prefer email over forums, I'll chime in
and say that I much prefer a forums setup over an email list. Yahoo
groups in particular is very poorly setup. The web interface is
horrible, and search engines seem to have a hard time properly indexing
the list. I've often found it's easier to use Google to search a
particular group than the native Yahoo search. Forums help keep topics
well organized and structured, which makes searching much easier.

A well run mailman list is also good, but unless you police posting
practices (top vs bottom posting, removing headers, etc) it can get
messy. And if people are using braindead clients like Outlook, it's
very hard or impossible to follow proper conventions.
