I think the best option is to use an SMTP library so you don't have to code all the protocol. Some libraries allow you to identify to a remote server and send secure TLS messages.

The best way to find a library is using apt on the board (if your board runs Debian):

# apt-cache search smtp library

First you must install the latest Debian image from embeddedarm (if you haven't done yet) so you get newest software.

By running that command on my TS-7800 (that's running Debian 5.0 - lenny) I could find tinymail (http://tinymail.org/) which seems to be a good option.

Also running the same command on my laptop (that runs Debian testing - wheezy) I found libESMTP (http://www.stafford.uklinux.net/libesmtp/) which seems more robust. That's not available on the Lenny repository (precompiled) but you can download it and compile it on your board.

I hope this is useful.

Happy hacking!
