that's the simple part (and there are simpler ways to do it) The harder part is to configure the mail system

I can recommend this. I use it, and have a wrapper script called "sendmail"
(it is a one liner :-), which has local mail server details etc and a
script called "mail" which sort of emulates bits of the send functionality
of the standard berkeley mail utility.

It allows me to script things like

do_job_generates_output | mail -s "subject line"

which I tend to use all over the place.

I actually have an msmtp binary compiled for the ts7260 with the 2.4 TS
kernel and the default bootimage.
