I ended up trying the procedure listed in the referenced post and it
worked. It seemed that the USB interface was set up, bu the ports
themselves were not powered on at boot. I poke8'd a 0x3 and afterward,
when placing a USB memory stick into the USB port, it would light up and
appear as /dev/sda1.
