Are you sure you've get the pinout right?  Check both boards serial 
pinout, you may need a null modem cable.  If both boards have tx/rx on 
the same pins then you need a null modem cable or to rewire one port so 
the rx/tx lines (and flow control lines if your using them) are swapped.
