Thanks, I'd done that but made a silly error copying, I had deb-src 
twice instead of deb as you indicate. (Though Christ knows how I'm 
supposed to deduce that from the error messages :? )

update worked and I've now installed autoconf et al , now back to 
compiling gnuplot cvs.

thanks for pointing me at the error.
