Well i think i gave it the old college try, but i think i have to find a new
platform for my projects.

started off with the ts 7300, can bus + enclosure, although the can bus says in
the docs it can do 1Mb it can only
do it to another one of the same units, ok so bought a TS-CAN1, that sorted
that..

bought the lcd, its packaged with the ribbon cable backwards, i didn't check ,
it fried, my fault ts offered to
replace it FOC, but i paid for a new one since i screwed up.

next added a xenarc monitor, tried for ages to get the usb touch screen working
under 2.4, just couldn't get it
going, gave up with that, used the throttle as an input instead. Stupid xenarc
seems insistent on detecing the video
mode at startup then every so often, which fails epically if you've got a black
or mostly black screen.

wrote all the graphics drivers, can never get rid of that darn cursor ! find i
can't do alpha blending without a
secondary buffer to read back from since reading back from the video memory
doesn't work, adding a second frame
buffer is ok since its fairly fast at transferring but i'm already running into
some slowdowns, and i'd hope to get
the 800x600 running.

now the problem of the battery backup so it'll shut down gracefully, bought a
TS-BAT3, doesn't fit in the enclosure
with the TS-CAN1.. ok so i can buy a new box from somewhere i guess.

finally after get the thing to boot up and shut down gracefully with the
battery backup, takes an awfully long time.

so after a few months at it, its all seems to work, the bat3 driver seems to
drop out for some unknown reason but i
just made a looping script to fix that.

get the bluetooth working, wireless , 5Hz gps, phidgets all working.

so today i finally get to pull out the car and do some testing, its been
sitting offline for a week or two...

TS doesn't boot, check the voltages, jumpers , nada, so i figure the TS-BAT3
has died or the NimH batteries have
just gone under voltage and are toasted, but i'd hope that it still power the
main board, no dice.. Remove the
TS-BAT3, power via the enclosure, boots up straight away.... so after the
hassle of getting the ts-bat3 to work
properly, it appears that it has to be on now again to hold a charge, which is
fair enough, not the right solution
for me, i guess i probably would be better with a supercap or something, or a
read only root that i can just switch
off and on but i wanted to have it do some stuff after the host was shut down.

anyway thats my tail of woe and i'm sure there are fixes to some of the issues
i've listed, but i've spent so much
time just trying to get the hardware to work with other bits of hardware,
drivers and so on, so now i'm looking for
something that runs a more modern version of linux or wince, has CAN 1Mb's that
can talk to other things other
itself, has support for at least 640x480 VGA 16 bit RGB framebuffer, working
usb host, working touch screen drivers,
a bonus would be 12V ADC's but thats not necessary, with a power system that
can shut down gracefully or won't
damage the boot sequence, and a fast boot time ?

any ideas ? the new lcd board looks interesting, but doesn't have CAN, i also
need sunlight readable, and honestly
i'm a little bit shy of getting another TS box.
