Use an RS232 line driver, something inexpensive like a MAX line 
driver.  The DIO outputs can be tied to the RS232 line driver's inputs, 
conveyed a long distance as RS232 12 to 15 volts to another RS232 line 
driver's input.  The output from that can go to your display.  And the 
RS232 line driver's handle high clock rates, much higher than you're 
using, I'm sure, so that shouldn't be a problem.
