Some people have varying success with the USB->RS232 adapters too. You
should first post to the list and see which models people recommend.
Also, some serial ports are 'stupid'. Particularly, my colleague's
Compaq desktop machine has a serial port (i don't know which uart chip
exactly) and even though it's set to the right settings, it randomly
'forgets' characters. That can make a huge difference when you're
burning something into flash from RedBoot for example. So he bought a
USB->RS232 adapter and that's much smoother.
The moral of the story is that some hardware just doesn't work like it's
supposed to.
