It sounds as though the kernel image you're using hasn't even had some
of the basic patches necessary to run the 2.6 kernel, which is why the
8MB thing seems to work.
i.e. Breton Saunder's Physmap patch...
Why don't you just scrap the kernel you're using, keep the filesystem,
but use one of the tried and tested kernels that I and many others have
already been using for months? (years?)
Just do a search on the list ... I think I've repeated 2.6 instructions
about 10 times.
... Not that I'm saying you shouldn't try to do it the hard way :) It's
definitely a learning experience.
