Yes, I've had considerable luck using an older host compiler when
working with crosstools, especially for older cross-compilers.

I use Fedora for a host. I believe up to at least FC4, they would keep
an older version of the host compiler on the system with a name
indicating the version number. On FC4, the command 'gcc32' would get
you GCC v 3.2.3. You could just specify 'CC=gcc32' on configure or
make lines to invoke the old compiler.

There's also a nice web page describing how to download and build
arbitrary versions of a compiler for Fedora:
  http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-gcc.html

Using a similar naming scheme you could have any number of old
compilers all on the same host.

Hopefully, one would be able to compile the version of crosstools you
want.

Frank
