Good point about getting data out a.s.a.p. in industrial context.
That's why I suggested EscP type printers.
I have an old 24 pin Epson that has not squealed for a long time but
it's EscP2 based. A more recent USB Epson also uses that. I'm pretty
sure that both will print character at a time if that's what you send
then.
There may be some buffering but you can send text to either by
echoing text or catting a file to the printer device from a shell. If
a high level program composes a page as a hires image and dumps it
out as graphic that's different issue.
But if you are serious about the harsh environment I would expect a
DM printer to stand up better than the precise but fragile desktop
USB models.
The downside of Epson : head dead = prt dead.
