Hi,

winprinters are like winmodems, ie they are only half of what they 
claim to be.

It's not case of USB or otherwise but that most modern printers cant 
print and most are USB. No need to search out antiquated stuff like 
dot matrix.

I suggest you look at Epson. Their printers are still real printers 
and to that extent often better for linux or macOS printing. Anything 
claiming to support EscP codes should work even on old linux systems 
like the std TS 2.4 releases since that is the protocol that dates 
back to dot matrix times. AFAIK Epson are the only ones to still 
support this.

TurboPrint is collection of commercial linux printer drivers but very 
fair price apx 50 euros and will support a very wide range of all 
marques of printer so may handle what you have already but I dont 
know if it works with 2.4 kernel. Check it out.
