Hi,
After lurking on this group for ages, I think I've finally decided to
take the plunge with the TS-7300, but want to make sure I understand
what I'm looking at. I have 3 somewhat unrelated projects that I'm
hoping to work towards, so some of my questions may seem contradictory.
First and foremost, The main motivation for going with the 7300 rather
than waiting for the 7800 is that I don't see any free Lattice FPGA
tools, whereas the Altera stuff is free for what I'd be needing. Are
there any free or low-cost options I'm missing?
TS-7300 Shopping list:
- 7300 w/64MB
- case/power supply
- null modem cable (I'm sure I have one somewhere, but I'll probably
never find it)
Will this get me going?
Questions/verifications
1) VGA is listed on the TS site as 800x600, but comments on the list
seem to indicate that it's only 640x480. Can I assume it's the latter?
If yes, anyone have pointers to 640x480 native res LCD's? I have a crt
I can use for now, so no hurry.
2) Kernel is 2.4.x only, due to the SD module. Anyone working
on/looking at 2.6?
3) Is there any point to getting the pre-installed SD images from TS?
I assume they are the same as the downloadable images, but given some
comments about distros needing tweaking, I thought I'd check.
4) Feedback on loading user code into the FPGA seems a bit spotty. I'm
hoping to use the 7300 to learn a bit about verilog/FPGA. If I'm
reading the forum posts correctly, if you disable the devices that
reference the fpga facilities (console/vga, eth1, etc) then user code
should load fine. Is this right?
For the record my hoped-for applications: (I'm planning separate SD
cards for each - being able to swap out your root filesystem quickly
is very cool)
a) thin-client remote-control for an audio PC (ie basic desktop).
Might also include SPI control of the DAC setup.
b) low-power monitoring for a remote off-grid cabin
c) (maybe) FPGA audio application - receiving audio over ethernet and
streaming I2S or left-justified audio out to a set of DACs
Thanks for any and all help. This group is a great resource, and I
wouldn't even think about plunging into these types of projects
without it.
