yes, it's really very simple to patch a package with gentoo's 
ebuilds, you just add an "epatch" line, recreate the digests that 
check source integrity before going ahead, then rerun the emerge 
command which will compile and install the package.

That you do only once, then it's just: emerge <pkgname> to rebuild 
you custom version.

It automates a lot of what you'd normally have to do to install an 
modified package on other systems.

Since embedded systems are inherently specials that need tweeks and 
patches, I think this approach has a lot to offer.
