You're right - I checked it with Mutt and there's no spaces. Thunderbird 
seems to not like double-hyphenated words and "corrects" by adding a 
space. Murggg. I hate clients that try to "correct" things for me.

This is certainly bizarre. How in the world can it unset the use flags? 
I'm going to try setting them in my host /etc/make.conf temporarily and 
see if that has any effect, though if it does it would have to be a bug. 
I may also try updating my host kernel to match yours, but - again - 
that shouldn't have any effect that I can understand.

Many thanks for the help. I'll report back when I get somewhere.
