Excellent! Perseverance pays off. The good thing about having
problems like this is you get to learn good debugging techniques.
I'm glad things worked out for you.
Perhaps you might post a summary of the sequence of commands you
used in Linux to partition and format your CF card, and then copy
the kernel and filesystem. For example, after you run fdisk and
formatted the card, where did you see the message about the
filesystem being detected as Win 95? Was it in dmesg when the
card was detected? A step-by-step guide might be useful to the
next guy ... or yourself in 6 months when you've forgotten
what you did ;)
