Thank you very much for the reply.  That explains why getty at 300 doesn't 
work, but getty 
at 2400 does.  I still have a problem with my application even at 2400, in that 
I cannot see 
data going out with an RS232 breakout box.

Does /dev/ttyTS0 have any requirements about DTS/DTR/CTS being asserted? 

I have tried it both with and without CRTSCTS in the termio settings.
