on this note I've downloaded crosstools and am attempting to compile a basic toolchain for gcc 4.1.0 and glibc 2.3.2 for a PPC mac OS X host.  I'll post my results in the morning...  Assuming I don't run out of disk space :)

I understand that TS has a toolchain based on gcc 4.x if you want to
try that.
