Ensure your terminal emulator has hardware/software flow control disabled. If 
you 
have verified this then try using another terminal emulator other than 
hyperterminal, teraterm is a free open source emulator for windows I would 
suggest.

Although you didn't mention what terminal emulator you are using
these are the two issues that cause the problem you described...
