Fails with:

VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)

Please append a correct "root=" boot option

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

 

I want to boot from CF, but I did go down the path of booting from ramdisk and then trying to mount the CF card with no luck.

What kernel version?
What patches?
What fails?
Are you wanting to boot from CF or just mount a CF card?
