I want to use a
ramdisk for my entire root filesystem so I can write files as I please

My root fs is mounted read-only with only the parts that need to be written non-persistently on a tmpfs (/tmp)  and a very small part with very infrequent changes on SD (some bits in /etc, /var).

RAM disk could work as well if you figure out how and have the RAM available of course.
