Check out gpsd: gpsd.berlios.de

I haven't had it running on a ts board yet but it worked great on a  
regular linux box.

It handles serial communications as well as parsing NMEA for you;  
just connect to it using tcp/ip, feed it simple commands and it gives  
you simple answers. Or just use gpspipe (comes with it) and dump the  
NMEA output to a file. When you're done flying (and still alive; I  
checked out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutan_VariViggen and I'm not  
so sure ;)), parse the file. There's quite a bit of info on the net  
on parsing NMEA. Lots of tools too (e.g. gpsbabel).
