Hi,
It should be relatively easy to drive the LCD via a couple of 8-bit
latches on the GPBUS - Write Data to latch 1 and then strobe the data
via 2 or more writes to latch 2 (which drives all the control lines).
If you want to read data back you'd need to have a tri-state buffer
reading back the data.
I don't know if you've used CPLDs before, but I'd also recommend
looking at the using a Xilinx (or quivalent) CPLD as the interface
logic as it would allow 'software' debugging of the hardware design...
