Woody is pretty outdated. The current "stable" version is "Sarge" aka Debian
3.1. I'm going to stop there, and advise you to spend a while looking at
Debian's website where they describe the versions.
My suggestion is to find a spare PC, and try Ubuntu, and Knoppix, and
Debian. Load one, play with it, load the next, play with it, etc. You will
learn a lot in the process.
To answer your question regarding 3.0 with R2, R4, and R6... they were all
"woody". I think it's correct to say they all have the same functionality, but
just different security updates etc. When there were enough patches to make it
worthwhile they would do a "release" and the CD vendors would update their
masters. Most people just "apt-get" their way to the new patches and don't
focus much on the releases.
Good luck,
Joe
