Make sure you have both hardware and software flow control turned 
off.  That being said, I've always found hyperterminal to be an 
abominable app....  I'm not sure what's availabe in the XP world; 
perhaps others can chime in...  Kermit comes to mind, but I think 
the windows version costs $.

That link might help, as might 'The UNIX programming environment' by 
Kernighan and Pike.  I'm not sure if that's still in print, but any 
decent bookstore or library ought to have at least one book on basic 
*nix....

Jackson's page for code samples.
