The real time clock on that board is big because it has a sealed
battery inside of it. Overall, it still takes less space on the
board than a coin cell battery holder, SPI chip, and crystal. It
takes 0 space on the TS-7250 and ts7260 since its placed on top of
the NAND flash chip. The RTC is a PC-standard RTC and so also
contains NVRAM and precision-cut 32Khz crystal inside.
This is a preferable solution in a lot of situations since its 100%
sealed from any environmental conditions (water, etc..) and its
immune to vibration. RTC's with a coin cell can vibrate off.
The battery will last 10 years in absense of power. Likely it will
last longer, but lithium battery manufacturers only typically
guarantee the chemistry of the battery for at most 10 years.
