tend to agree that its a bulky chip
but
its a standard chip(module) think it has some ram on it also 8k?,
but it also contains a batt and xtal so its self contained
ok so they do spi based rtc's that may be better suited but they
would require an external batt
i would suggest you fitted a socket and got one of the rtc modules
then after 10 years when the batt dies you can replace it , if they
still make them then
they have been around for years so not shure how long there
production life is atm
