The $9.95 dongle I have used in the past I bought from
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HE-280B&cat=CBL&cpc=USB. I
actually took apart this dongle to find its based on a C-Media CM108
USB audio chip (http://www.cmedia.com.tw/product/CM108.htm)

Also, http://www.turtlebeach.com/site/products/audioadv/micro/. I
haven't used this one but it has a SPDIF optical digital audio output
and probably better analog specs than the CM108 (though the CM108 is
actually pretty good-- 94dB SNR)
