Excellent thanks. One last question, If I want to modify the default settings for /dev/ttyAM0 from 115200 to 9600, is it sufficient to modify the two lines in inittab that refer to ttyAM0? Or is there something else I want to modify. ?

You should never modify the default eth0 address directly like that.

modify it in /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-eth0

you don't have to reboot to check it out, just run /etc/init.d/network restart
be aware though if you are connected via telnet and you change the ip address you will lose the telnet session.

I am going to post my serial code shortly, which does basically ethernet to serial , you can see how to do this

Hi Dave,

I am trying to log on form the Ethernet port and have exactly the same initialisation done, when the console is set to /dev/ttyAM0. I want to run /dev/ttyAM0 with a different baudrate setting, and connect to a serial device.

I have commented out the lines in inittab, or modified them from respawn to runonce. I noticed that this makes a difference in the way my application runs in that I can not insmod certain modules. Which is why I am asking this question.

How about this question, maybe you can help here. On which startup script should I modify the default eth0 address?. I would like to add ifconfig eth0 x.x.x.x

Thanks!.

Not exactly sure what you are doing or not doing, but this should be as simple as commenting out the line in inittab and rebooting.I do it all the time.

Hi,

I would like to remove getty /dev/ttyAM0 from /etc/inittab so that I can use COM1 for other purposes but when I do that not everything is properly initialised.

When I disable the /dev/ttyAM0 getty launch from /etc/inittab and logon to the TS-2000 from the Network or /dev/ttyAM1 the proper boot scripts are no longer executed. How can I get the logons from Com2 behave the same ways from COM1, or even better when I disable both com ports from /etc/inittab how can I ensure that network logons will have all initialisation done as is normally done by logging on from network.
