What particular problems do you have using apt-get? It works fine for me.

On linux you can use "swap over loopback over NFS". It means you can
mount an NFS volume and use a file in the NFS mounted directory as a
swap partition attaching it to a loopback device. I'm not sure if this
is possible with *BSD.
