I don't know what kind of application you're trying to develop and
neither the way you will be running the GUI program off the TS board
(it is certainly not through the serial port), but maybe you could
give a try to GTK-Directfb. You must recompile GTK and GDK so that GDK
uses the kernel framebuffer device interface instead of the X-Window
interface. The greatest advantage is that it doesn't depend on any
particular major kernel version and that with GTK you already have a
full set of nice widgets ready to be used.
