I have the MixPre-6 and the latest firmware, 3.03, is fine. It is far super=
ior to the Zoom recorders for one simple fact, the channels can be linked a=
s a stereo pair. This allows one channels gain to act as a master gain for =
both channels and the other to act as an offset. So, when using a single mi=
crophone, as in a parabola, one gain knob is the master gain and the other =
can be used to offset to the gain of the second channel to create a safety =
that is 10dB lower than the first channel =E2=80=93 incase of loud transien=
ts. There is no way to do this with the Zoom F4, F8, or F8n. You have to ri=
de both gain controls at the same time, which is impossible if your are rec=
ording birds in the field with a parabola.
I also like the sound of the pre-amps in the MixPre series when compared to=
the Zoom F series. There is more presence in the lower frequencies with th=
e MixPre.
