As far as I know the best preamps in that price range are the Sound Devices=
MixPre=E2=80=99s and the Zoom F4 and F8. You have excellent
input noise performance and high gain. You also have limiters and more flex=
ible high pass filters.
Sound Devices is famous also for having some of the best headphone amplifie=
rs in industry, which is very good. I also do know
that the MixPre is extremely resistant to radio frequency interference whil=
e I have read mixed reports about the Zoom F8. Someone
complained about problems with a digital radio mic receiver close to a Zoom=
F8. These digital =E2=80=9Creceivers=E2=80=9D actually transmit as well.
I tried to cause trouble transmitting with a 5 W VHF walkie talkie while it=
was connected to a Rode NTG-8 and the MIxPre 3 really
resisted it.
Some people prefer the sound of the MixPres and I have read clamis about th=
e distortion performance of the Zooms stating
that the MixPres are better. But probably you won=E2=80=99t hit that in mos=
t cases.
I own a MixPre 3 myself and I am really happy with it. They have released u=
pdated models now.
One of the advantages of Sound Devices is excellent technical support and a=
s far as I know long term product support.
A downside of the MixPres is, they seem to be more sensitive than others to=
misbehaving SD cards. But I guess the new
MixPre Series II with a more powerful SOC has more memory and CPU power ava=
ilable for retries, etc. So it should be
better.
I don=E2=80=99t own a Zoom and I haven=E2=80=99t tested them. But I went fo=
r the MixPre and I am happy with it. I forgot: the screen in the
MixPre 3 is much better than the Zoom F4.
