Most likely suspect is the input jack. 3.5mm jacks are notoriously unreliab=
le, including the internal switch contacts that are shifted when the plug i=
s in or out. Exercise the mic input by plugging-unplugging ten times and tw=
isting the plug, too. A short squirt of Caig DeoxIT in the mic input jack f=
ollowed by exercise would be best.

I imagine Sony is quoting you for replacement of the whole circuit board.
