Sony PCM M10 Stereo balance

Hello!

I've got two Sony PCM M10's which I primarily use for connecting a pair of =
omnis into the mic in. From time to time I'd like to use the build in micro=
phones, but there seems to be a balancing problem: one side is considerably=
quiter than the other, about 3dB on one of them, more than 12 on the other=
.

Rebalancing the levels afterwards does not always produce a balanced result=
 - the imbalance seems to be frequency dependent, so always applying the sa=
me amount of gain (measured with a central mono source under controlled con=
dition) does not produce equivalent results under real world conditions.

Is this a common problem with the units? I'd like to understand what's caus=
ing the behaviour, as the external mics don't have that problem.
I understand that there is a multitude of possible reasons but maybe someon=
e can share similar experiences?

Best,
Chris Erkal
