Earlier Olympus LS recorders

Hi all,
Vicky's recent post re the LS-11 was in some ways apposite to a recent expe=
rience. I have been using LS recorders on and off for a few years, starting=
with the LS-10. One of the frequently used buttons (I can't remember which=
) on this recorder became sticky and made it a problem to use. I then picke=
d up an LS-5 in original condition off of eBay and on initial testing found=
all to be fine. Well, either it was at first, or I tested it using externa=
l mics, but when I came to use it on holiday in the Spring, using only the =
internal mics I found that only the right channel was recording! It still w=
orks fine with external stereo mics like my AT-8022. So, having read that t=
he LS-11 was slightly better than either of the previous I waited for one t=
o come up on eBay. This happened and I bought it. It arrived last week and =
I did of course test this immediately on every function I could think of, a=
nd I'm glad to say that it appears perfect in every respect. I'm off on hol=
iday again in a couple
of weeks to the wilds of Wales, and although I don't expect a great deal t=
o be happening of massive interest, the LS-11 will certainly be used. I ten=
d to use these portable recorders more frequently these days, and my HD-P2 =
and associated better quality mics are left in the cupboard. This is probab=
ly partly due to both my advancing years and also lesser mobility from a pr=
oblem knee.
But back to the LS-11 I see that they are still being sold new from Japan a=
t very high prices, so perhaps that's an indication of their quality and co=
ntinuing demand. What I can say is that their handling and user friendlines=
s is second to none. I recently bought an LS-100 which although it has the =
ability to use XLR mics is nothing like as easy and straightforward as it's=
smaller siblings. It may take over from my HD-P2 in my quest for portabili=
ty, but only time will tell.
A personal opinion and experience
Max
